Flying vs. Driving

What is your preferred way to travel? Flying, driving, even train travel, are some of the many ways to get to where you're going. So what is your favorite? I love flying, but I like the convince of driving as well. Let's talk about the best way to decide your travel transportation.

The first factor for me when deciding if I'm going to fly or drive is the distance. If I need to travel across the country, I'm for sure going to fly. A four to six hour flight versus a few days drive? Flying just makes sense. However if I had a ton of time to drive across country and explore different states, that would be really fun, but most of the time that's not the case. So flying it is! Now shorter destinations are where I really weigh out what's the best.

It's no surprise we LOVE Disney, but it takes about ten hours for us to drive there. So we are always debating on what is the best way to get there. Let's break down the pros and cons of each.

Flying

Pros to Flying

  • Shorter Travel Time

  • Don't have to worry about stopping for rest stops or gas on your way

  • Not as tired

  • Can't get lost!

  • Visiting Airports can be fun

  • No parking fees at your destination.

Cons to Flying

  • Most of the time more expensive

  • Restrictions on how much you can pack

  • Restrictions on what you can pack

  • No flexibility in your travel plans, if you're not there for your flight, it leaves without you

  • A stranger may fall asleep on you, or bother you during your flight

  • Pet travel can be tricky and dangerous

Driving

Pros to Driving

  • You're own your own schedule

  • Freedom to pack as much as will fit in your vehicle!

  • Able to bring food and drinks

  • Easier on Pets

  • Able sightsee on your way to your destination

  • Don't have to travel with strangers

  • Don't need to rent a vehicle

Cons to Driving

  • Longer travel time

  • Have to pay for parking/tolls

  • Limited space in vehicle if traveling with a large group

  • Driving can be stressful

  • Trouble finding clean and safe rest stops

I've both flown and driven to Disney and done the math on the cost of flying verses driving, and driving always ends up being cheaper. Most of the time we decide on driving. I like being able to take food and drinks with me, and not having any restrictions on how much I can pack. It's also nice having a vehicle with me. Depending on your destination having a car is essential to getting around. However we do consider flying if we find cheap flights or have a really short trip planed. We've gotten flights to Orlando for as low as $60, but those cheap flights are hard to come by. However if I'm going to New York City, I want to fly so I don't have to worry about driving in the city. You can also have food delivered to you now in most places. Now that we've looked at all the pros and cons, what is your preferred way to travel?
